Python eats man, hoax or not? How safe are drunks really in India?

The main question: can a python swallow a passed out drunk?

In the past 2 days the weblog of Lords of the Drinks exploded. Were we happy to inform you on the 25th of November that we reached the milestone of 50.000 views, now we have more than 3 million. Insanity all the way. The explanation is that one of our posts became a worldwide hype, namely the one where we brought you the news that a python smothered and ate a drunk man on the streets of India. A lot of people claim this news is a hoax. We can just tell you that we didn’t came up with the story ourselves, but read about it in 4 different sources before creating the post. After so many comments with links, opinions and expertise we honestly don’t know what to believe anymore. So for us the question is no longer if the story is true, but is it even possible? We’ve gotten a lot of angry comments too from Indians. It was never our purpose to make their country look bad, but an interesting question remains: how safe are the drunks in India really?

India is indeed an intriguing country. Not just because of the many different cultures, languages and religions, but also because of it’s wild life. Now we have to say that both Lords of the Drinks Micky and Nikolay have never been to India yet. We don’t know weither the pythons that live there can indeed swallow a full grown man. That’s why we didn’t participate too much in the discussion that followed our post. However we did find it extremely interesting. Here’s a selection of some of the replies we found most valuable for the discussion.

“don’t get drunk on the streets in India.”
That’s a pretty big line to say mentioning INDIA. People are getting drunkeveryday everywhere in India and Kerala is just a small state in a huge country.

Maybe the western media always reports the crazy stuff that happens in India. Otherwise it’s very normal here. (I’ve lived in other countries too). Having 1\6th of the world’s population means there will be more stories here i guess.

First of all,how the fuck did the python ate the man ? It’s practically impossible, just because his mouth would be too small, something’s fishi here ! Just think abut it !

I’m not suggesting this is real or Fake. BUT to whomever keeps suggesting a Python cannot swallow a human whole… do some research. Although attacks on humans are unlikely, I’m not even sure if any humans / swallowed have ever been confirmed. I can assure you the capability is there. I.E The African Rock python and other VERY large Pythons could swallow a human whole. For those who think humans “shoulders are too large” How do you think some pythons kill their pray ? just by swallowing them? Or is it by crushing them, making them easier to swallow. A python can dislocate it’s Jaws to swallow large pray, that’s how. Albiet LOL It could still be a Fake.

If you say its impossible you don’t know snakes. This is not any snake; it is a python. Pythons can swallow alligators, dogs and many relatively large animals. You don’t even know the size of the man it swallowed or the python itself, so you can’t say it’s impossible.

@the person who said that the man this is a false photograph because snakes cannot open their jaws wide enough to get around a mans shoulders, please tell me how that would not also apply to A FULL GROWN CHITOW DEER which also happens to be the serpents natural prey. Their jaws don’t work like ours do. If a python is big enough, it will constrict and eat anything not fast enough to get away or anything too stupid to trample into its path and stay there. They also have a vise like grip and tiny razor sharp teeth that make it near impossible for prey to escape. You would either have to kill the snake or have someone prise its jaws apart to escape. So this is natural selection its very finest.

have seen a pic of a python that ate a man in South America, they cut the snake open and he was inside, unless that was photoshopped too.

This doesn’t make sense to me. I watched a snake eat a bullfrog once (not by choice, it was behind my car that was in my garage, and I coldn’t pull out or I’d run over it.) It took almost an hour. Wouldn’t someone have seen a snake trying to swallow a whole human, especially since it was right in front of a liquor store, and intervene before it went to far? What a way to go. Poor fellow.

Not true. It is physically impossible for a python or constrictor to cosume an adult as the jaws cannot pass the shoulders. There have been rare occasions where snakes have eaten people, although these rare incidents have usually involved children (under 12) Certainly a huge snake may constrict a human to death but this to is rear an mostly defencive in nature.

The largest snakes can’t swallow humans. They have been know to try but can’t get past a the shoulders. I saw one on discovery channel that actually choked to death try to swallow a 5 foot tall asian man that only weighed about 120lbs.

They claim this happened in Kerala, which is in the extreme southwest of India and inhabited by one python species, the Indian rock python (Python molurus) which does not get large enough to take a human, but the python in the photograph is a Reticulated python (Python reticulatus), a species may occur in the extreme northeast of India, near the Burmese border, but is essentially a Southeast Asian species. Trust me, I am an herpetologist, this is my line of work.

Concluding
In the end it’s probably not a great idea to drink until you pass out on the streets of a low populated area in India. But we can also conclude that getting eaten by a giant snake should probably not be the biggest of your worries. On the other hand, we’d like to finish this post with some Romanian wisdom that one of our readers Mircea Ionescu shared with us: ,,In Romania is a saying: “The drunk has his god”. It is run over by car, train or tram if a drunk falls on the street nothing happens, not even a scratch, if drunk is covered by snow not sick and do not even drown if it falls into the water. So certainly a drunk can not be eaten by a snake.”
In other words: don’t be afraid to get hammered, not even in challenging area’s like the Indian outdoors.

  1. I dont know if pythons are capable to swallow full grown Humans, thé only place where they have giant snakes that CAN eat cows or Humans is Bornéo!

  2. It is impossible for any modern day large constrictor to swallow a full grown man. Although large constrictors are certainly capable to kill a man they’re mouths simply do not stretch far enough on the x- axis to fit past a mans shoulder blades in order to swallow him. This is a fact you will hear on ANY documentary you watch on large constrictors.

” I have lived in india for 23 years and is quite frequent visitor. I have seen cobras and many other non venomous snakes in the wild. But never a python in the wild. In captive yes. This information is hoax. The publisher cannot just escape by saying that they did not start it. This is defaming a country’s image. Either the publisher need to find a proof or needs to apologise in every major news paper.
