This world is getting more and more crazy. Stuff that we were laughing away as stupid science fiction in the past is getting very, very real. The latest violation of people’s privacy in Europe comes from the United Kingdom, where new laws are introduced to force people to wear booze bracelets. This device measures the amount of alcohol in your sweat every half hour. Soon British courts will have the power to give alcohol offenders a drinking limit or cut them off completely. In the United States the booze bracelets are already being used. For example actress Lindsay Lohan is wearing one.
A pilot of this project called The Alcohol Abstinence and Monitoring scheme will run first in South London next month. After that it can be introduced everywhere across England and Wales. The weird thing is that the system is far from waterproof. According to the American makers of the brand SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring) the sensor in their bracelets can be set off by spray tans or fragrances that contain alcohol. Don’t worry, this scheme will go the same way as the electronic tagging devices. They will get some useless company like G4S to run the thing, the bracelets either won’t work, won’t be set up properly or no one will bother to monitor them. Luckily, responsible booze hounds such as myself will be uneffected; it’s for the drunken skanks who can’t have a half pint without committing a crime they will be clamped onto.

This is not a violation of anyone’s privacy. If you repeatedly get in to trouble, and I’m not talking about the kind of trouble we get into ;), you forfeit certain rights to the courts. Anyone who is convicted of drunk driving, drunken domestic violence, or other shitty things that bad drunks do, should be thanking the lord they’ve been given the chance to try to control themselves, rather than just being thrown in the slammer.

Well I agree that for some people it might be best not to drink but it’s an easy tool to abuse. If Lindsay Lohan already got one, who is next? Apparently it’s not just for hooligans and such.
