The first parrot ever to be locked up in a drunk tank.

We were always quite fund of parrots. Probably since when picturing these birds in our minds they are usually in the company of a pirate carrying a big bottle of rum. But serious damage has been done to this positive image by a parrot in Mexico. According to the Mexican website El Universal this talking animal ratted out his owner when he drove past a police checkpoint with the words ‘He’s Drunk, he’s drunk’. After a confession by his feathered friend 49-year old Guillermo was tested positive on alcohol and was sent to an institution called the ‘hangover prison’. 

The incident occurred in the area of Lomas de Padierna, at alcohol checkpoint 8 at the junction of Picacho Ajusco and Tizimín to be exact. As Guillermo drove by his parrot screamed out ‘he’s drunk, he’s drunk’. The police officers in charge first thought there was a second person in the car, but when they looked inside they just saw Guillermo and his green bird. Still they pulled out a breathalyzer. Guillermo failed the test and was taken to a drunk tank.

You might think he didn’t want to see his parrot for some time, but the opposite was true. He claimed his companion would surely die if they were separated, so the parrot ended up in jail too. With that he was probably the first bird ever to be locked up in a drunk cell. We are quite interested in what the drunk owner told his pet when locked up together. Probably something like: “Polly want a cracker? Then better remember to never rat out the hand that’s feeding you again.”
