The best beer brewers in the world.
The Belgian beer Westvleteren XII has been awarded as the best beer in the world. It was the second year in a row that this Trappist outranked all other beers in the anual rating by Ratebeer.com. Westvleteren is brewed by monks in a Belgian village that goes by the same name. The Flemish monastery finished well in front of the American brands Three Floyds Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout (2nd), Russian River Pliny the Younger and Toppling Goliath Kentucky Brunch (shared 3rd place).
It’s not that easy to get your hands on the winning beer, since the monastery of Westvleteren doesn’t do mass production. Because of that it’s only sold at the monastery itself and a few bars and pubs. But if you would manage to get your hands on this quadrupel brew, you’re not likely to down this stuff too fast at once. With an alcohol percentage of 10,2 it will hit you hard.

I do recall that some years ago this was the place – what with the samples plus what we purchased ourselves – that I left the worse for drink. I still go across to France/Belgium once a month to stock up – it is truly a fine range of beers for that neck of the woods. Great post.

Thanks! Yeah Belgium has so many awesome beers. Near my hometown in Holland there’s also a monastery with it’s own beer. I’m gonna pay a visit tomorrow. 😀

Well probably they are special beers that were not produced on a large scale. Would be nice to try a good American beer once, since I’m not mad about Budweisers.

When I lived in Germany I had the honor of sampling some dark malt and I got an instant headache. The taste was great and American beer became quite mundane.
