The Challenge arose as a way to raise awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. The activity went viral on social media, with millions of people challenging others to get splashed with ice cold water in 24 hours and record this on video. Some people do this instead of donating money, some of them donate but decline the ice bath, and some do both.

Sir Patrick Stewart is known for his roles in Star Trek and X-Men. Other celebrities who took part in the challenge include Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, etc.
